We Want 'The Libertine'!
News is finally starting to come through now about the fate of the Johnny Depp film, The Libertine. Miramax will distribute the film in the US, releasing it sometime this summer according to the official web site.
As exciting as this news is, it’s also a little scary considering how Miramax handled the release of Finding Neverland last year. It was supposed to be a limited release, but then their web site declared “in theaters EVERYWHERE”… but then it wasn’t, and it was back to New York and L.A. Then it would expand to 200+ cities… but no, they backed off that and only released it to 80-something… and the ones they did release it to only got it for a couple of weeks before it was gone again.
I finally got to see Finding Neverland on DVD yesterday. Yesterday! That’s pathetic.
Well, guess what, Miramax? People outside of New York and Los Angeles do go to the movies. A lot more than those who actually do live there, believe it or not. Please don’t make us play hide-and-seek with this one as we did with Finding Neverland.
In fact, maybe we should tell them while they’re still in the planning stages of getting this movie released. We’re out here, people! And we want to see it!
Here’s the Miramax mailing address, if you’d like to add your voice:
Miramax Films
375 Greenwich Street
New York, NY 10013-2338
So get out there and gather up all the Johnny Depp fans you know… all the John Malkovich fans… all the Samantha Morton fans… all the fans of long curly wigs and debauched 17th century poets… have them get a piece of paper, an envelope and a stamp, and let Miramax know loud and clear…
We want The Libertine!
