Spoilers or Not?

With the release of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End coming later this week, the internet has been flooded with clips, interviews, movie stills and early reviews of the film. Someone on the message board posed an interesting question: Do you read the spoilers before a film comes out, or do you try to avoid them?
For me, that's easy -- I try to avoid them. I've obviously seen the photos and official clips that have been released, but I haven't read any of the early reviews or plot spoilers. I like to see a movie myself and get my own opinion of it before I read everyone else's.
That's obviously not foolproof, though. I tried really hard to avoid spoilers back when From Hell was about to come out, but I accidentally read a yahoogroups message that gave away the ending. That was depressing. LOL! The same kind of thing happened with Secret Window, but it wasn't quite as blatant. A hint of something mentioned in a group post just clicked for some reason, and I figured out the twist before I ever saw the movie. I still enjoyed both films immensely, I just wonder how much better it would have been the first time around to actually be surprised, you know? The hazards of running a fan site, I guess.
So, what about you? Do you read spoilers or try to avoid them?

Yes. I also try to avoid them. I don't want to know the whole story line before I see it in the theatre. But I do like to watch all the short previews on this site!
Greetz from Holland!:D
I read everything I come across but don't actively seek out spoilers. I take everything I read with a pinch of salt. I hate reviews. The ones I read about The Libertine were negative but I thought the movie was superb. A lot of critics seem to have no idea what makes a good movie and seem to pan some of them just to get attention for themselves or to uphold their own image.
I avoid spoilers like the plague. Nothing drives me crazier than a topic title with a spoiler in it. Even semi-spoilers make me mad. Sadly, that means I have to avoid many of the message boards I sometimes visit. And that's exactly what I'll be doing until after the showing on Thursday. Time is moving at a snail's pace --will it ever get here?
I avoid spoilers all together. I prefer reading a brief description of what the movie is about..and see some photos. People will try to tell me about their favorite parts of certain films. I literally bite their heads off when I am stopping them! LOL!!!
I don't mind spoilers when I walk into the theater I forget about everything that was said because I am just really excited to see a new movie of Johnnys. Plus knowing a little bit more about the movie helps me out because then I don't get so worked up about what is going to happen next!!
I totally agree with Anonymous #1. 99% of critics are idiots and apparently get their jobs by being provocative rather than intelligent. Further proof of the Jerry Springer-fication of our culture :( In fact I've gotten so I DON'T read reviews anymore, just interviews (from reliable sources). If there are spoilers, well so be it. Very few plot lines surpise me any more (except for maybe the end of The Departed, and it shouldn't have, given the title). Ultimately I'll be watching it on DVD multiple times and fast-forwarding through everything that isn't Johnny anyway. Someone should do a series--Johnny reading the newspaper, Johnny washing the car, Johnny clipping his toe nails... I'd buy the boxed set!
reading the reviews hurt. i love Empire mag, but i WILL love it when AWE comes out and judge for myself. critics werent kind to DMC, but then again i knew what they were getting at..i just hope that since AWE ties all the (many)'loose ends' together, it'll blow everyone AWAY ;D
No,no,no!I never read and watch spoilers because they only make everything not so interesting.
For me it's much better to watch video clips or read reviews and interviews after a film,to compare my impressions with the others' or to recall some moments of the movie.
I'm sorry if something here is written wrongly:English is not my home language.
And thank you for this great page!!!
Hey,
in the netherlands is a programme on tv. they show pieces from the 3th movie and around that all, they do it like eveybody loves the movie and everything around it... they even have a women 'act' like Jack Sparrow...
it makes me sick, so i try to avoid everything!
greats Yvonne
i don't read to much about the movies before they come out.
I try to avoid them , but I will always look at short clips and some pics, my litlle sister Ella loves Johnny Depp more than me and loves working out story lines, and for Pirates of the Caribbean At worlds end she is doing rather well!
i cant help it..my eyes just read them..its unvoluntary!
I also try to avoid them, because otherwise there's no surprise! I don't want to know anything! No, no, no I want to see the movie! LOL!
I'm embarrassed to say I'm one of those people who reads the end of the book if I'm concerned how it's going. Yeah ! I read spoilers and watch clips but it doesn't stop me from enjoying the film at all.
I don't listen to critics, the media, or view spoilers, unless it's a movie I'm debating to see. In all of Johnnys' movies, POTCAWE has been the only one I looked at spoilers, but being Johnny Depp, that doesn't curtail me from seeing it. DO NOT BOYCOTT THIS MOVIE, IT'S NOT THE ACTORS FAULT,AND THEY ALL PUT TOO MUCH OF THEIR LIVES INTO 3 PICTURES!! SAVVY??
I never read spoilers! at least not about johnny depp movies. Like those little kids books that say only part of the movie? I avoid 'em. I look at pictures but not the words. sometimes none of them at all.
I read it all. The surprise of a movie isn't what its about for me. I like to compare what they say on the internet to what it really is. I have the 36 pages of the leaked script for POTC 3. I actually have 4 different versions, and i like to compare the clips to the script and find which one is more accurate.from what I've read, P3 sounds amazing! I want to know all I can right now. I guess its just i am really impatient. This week is going to be awful because i am just itching in my pants to see P3. I already have my tickets!
heheh I posted that question on the message board....DeppDoll6 A.K.A. Sam...I feel special lol...But yea i avoid spoilers...i like surprises
Sometimes I read the spoilers but I don't read what the endings are. But by the time I read the spoilers I already know what the movie's about so I kinda skim over. I'm really glad I didn't read Secret Window, but I already knew how The Libertine was going to end without the spoilers. I just like the gist of the films. Still doesn't stop me from seeing them.
Not to change the subject....but Is it me or did anyone notice he doesn't have that mole that was on the left side of his chin anymore? Not that it matters. Just curious.
i was surprised to read a spoiler in an interview with jerry bruckheimer. ouch! it is hard for the principals to answer the question, "what is awe about?" without giving parts away. i like to hear from the actors and director, their impressions of the work. i guess i will see the movie before i read the reviews, but i definitely will read them, afterward.
I try to avoid the spoilers. Oh my gosh how I try to avoid the spoilers, especially for a movie that I really look forward to watch, like Pirates 3. I don't look at any pre-leased pics or clips. I only watched the trailer once, I don't read any interviews and reviews; I don't even look at icons and avatars made by spoiler pics.... I like going into a movie knowing not what to expect, especially when Jack Sparrow is the main character. XDD
I try to avoid them and usually do. I do like to see the trailers but most of the times I just go on gut instinct. I don't thing much of critics. They don't pay to see the movie (most of the time) also I am sure that the taste of a movie is individual. I see what I like regardless what other people think.
I definitely try to avoid them..! I hate it when a film's plot I've been waiting for is spread all over the internet as rumors and spoilers..
I want to have the "I didn't expect that"-feeling when I see a new movie..^^
I mean, what's the point in seeing a movie if you already know what's going to happen?
Oh my,Allison, I envy you so much!;)
More than knowing the end,I'd like to know how were the other versions, the differences, what may have justified the choice of one of them, instead of another, etc.
Normally,I only watch all that's officially released, but I wouldn't say no if someone presented me all the scripts, lol.
I read spoilers for films that i don't particularly like, like Harry Potter (although not much to spoil there, books and whatnot XD)
But if I'm really looking forward to seeing it, I really avoid spoilers as much as possible, because I'm so afraid of spoiling it for me! Hence the name "spoilers" I guess.
Yeah,
Yesterday at Best Buy, I picked up a kiddie book of At Worlds End, and I started to flip through it, and then threw it down, thinking, what, am I crazy, I'm going to ruin it for myself. I think they should wait to put that stuff out, til the film is released. I could have sued for psychological damage. LOL
I never pay attention to the critics - what do they know anyway ... they trash the best films so if anything I am more apt to go see the film if the critics didn't like it - they did it to Johnny and Andy Garcia as well and I've like everything I've ever seen him in as well. I did see a "script" and some ideas of the plot for At World's End but didn't pay attention to them. Val, NJ
Hi, saw the movie yesterdaynight and it's great but in my opinion too long. If it had been an hour shorter it would be better but spectacular special effects a very funny captain Jack, it was awesome.
cant wait till tomorrow when i'l finally see the film!!!! Johnny you rock!!!!!!!!!
I think P2 was spoilt for me after seeing some of the jokes over and over before actually seeing the film.
I have avoided watching any of the TV spots or reviews etc for P3 and after seeing the movie today I am glad I did, as all the humour and plot evolution was fresh.
I saw the movie today, and though some people say it was too long, i didn't think so - it needed to be a certain length to resolve everything - and with all the anticipation I would have been dissapointed if it had just been a short flick - anyway cant have too much Jack Sparrow! ;p
I do avoid spoilers. Unfortunately i came to know many movies endings and details by silly friends you know LOL! so, because of my experiance whenever someone stats mentioning that topic i just run away, =)

I look for spoliers. It doesn't spoil the movie for me.
I think it is lucky because I would never have brought tissues with me as the other Pirate films were not sad and this one had several sad scenes and I would have been a mess without my tissues.

NO!! I don't read spoilers, whats the point of seeing a movie if you read a spoiler?!?!
I seen POTC at worlds End today, I must say I was quite impressed, I will probably go see it again next weekend..LOL
Someone online blew the ending of Dead Man's Chest for me last summer, so that was a bummer. I take special care to avoid any sites that might have spoilers until after I see it.
Hate spoilers, I even avoid previews if it's a movie I know I'm going to watch so pretty much any Johnny Depp movie. Trailers show way too much, I like to go into the theatre not knowing what to expect. It's more entertaining that way. Sad to admit I have run out of the theatre to the embarrassment of my friends when they previewed Dead Man's Chest as well as At World's End. But I gotta say it was worth it.
