Thoughts from the Premiere

posted by Trish Bennett 12:07 PM

Yesterday's premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End was a interesting ride, not only for the thousands who actually attended, but also for the tens of thousands more who followed the event on the internet.

In watching the event progress through the reports at the message board, I think it became a learning experience for us all. While the day started with excitement and anticipation, it ended in disappointment, bitterness, and in the heat of high emotions, even calls to boycott the film when it is released in theatres.

From a fan's perspective, it certainly would be disappointing to travel a long way, spend a lot of money, stand in line from the early hours of the morning, and get nothing more in return than a glimpse of the person you came to see get rushed past you in a swarm of security people. But as fans, I think we all realize (especially in the calmer light of day) that it would be impossible for one person to meet and talk to each and every fan who shows up at events like this. Inevitably, someone is going to be disappointed, and that's really no one's fault.

Unfortunately, a few of the people disappointed in this particular instance were being followed by many thousands more on the internet, and their tale and perspective gave the event a bit of a black eye. It was the luck of the draw, obviously, and it could well have worked out the other way -- they could have been one of the lucky ones who did get their moment, and the mood for the rest of us watching from afar would have been dramatically different.

For fans, I think the lesson is that showing up at a public appearance doesn't guarantee anything. Hopes for autographs or a few moments of a star's time need to be tempered with the reality that it just doesn't always happen. It's wonderful when it does, it sucks when it doesn't, and it's really just luck either way.

At the same time, though, I think it's also a learning experience for the movie studios who host these big events. Up to about 10 years ago, maybe even as recently as 5, premieres were designed for media coverage. Fans still showed up, but these events were primarily intended to spread the word about a film through the glitz and glamour of the stars on the red carpet along with the first public screening.

The times may not be a-changin', but the definition of "media coverage" definitely is. Instant communication, blogs, message boards, e-mail groups, organized fan sites -- all of these things have entered the media realm and are a powerful force. Many people look to these sources before or even instead of more traditional sources like newspapers and television. And since these outlets are much more difficult to control, perhaps the time has come for the studios to realize that the fans who attend these events are becoming equally important in the promotion of a film or a cause as the traditional news outlets who cover them.

There's a happy medium in there somewhere. Fans and promoters just need to be willing to meet each other halfway.

Dear Trish!
You are so right! thankyou.
And I wouldn't boycot the movie - wouldn't dream of it - I wouldn't do that to our Johnny, and besides; I need to see it!

In fact,I think if I was on such a ceremony I of course wouldn't expect to get an autograph or to talk with a star.
That's why I have never been to any premieres.

Excellent essay, Trish. Your comments to everyone are right on the money. I hope we start getting more positive tales of the experience to balance out the frustrated ones--seems like people who were having a good experience were probably less likely to post their comments, not necessariy that no one was having a good time. And good point about changing media--perhaps a behemoth like Disney doesn't care about the little guy, but more likely they just don't get it. (Doesn't say much about their marketing execs! Why didn't they take advantage of the internet themselves rather than just waiting for the usual media jackals to show up? They'd have had more control over the "experience" of the event for millions of people and could have put whatever spin on it they wanted.) Better logistical planning would have made all the difference too--the park is a closed venue for heaven's sake, and they had plenty of time to plan, so there shouldn't have been any difficulties in orchestrating star/fan contact and making known ahead of time what level of contact the fans could expect. I realise things don't always go according to plan, but if they can drop $300m on a movie, they ought to be able to plan an afternoon party. (but hey, they didn't ask me... :)

Damn! What a honey. Gotta love a man who's been wearing the same boots and the same three pairs of jeans for 20 years. Probably has a guitar pick in one of those pockets, too. Sigh.

Great pics! You must have been up all night!

Once again, Trish, you are the voice of reason. Very well put. It did kind of sour the experience for me (following the thread on the DI board) when the anger and bitterness started. I was just looking forward to someone saying what Johnny was wearing, did he look happy, etc. I was not expecting him to sign an autograph and hug each and every fan. This was an evening's work for Johnny, and he did the best he could, God love him.

Perfectly put, Trish.
What you said completely reminds me of that story going around about Orlando Bloom explaining to the fan who was mad that she'd been to every one of his premieres but never met him that, as much as he would like to meet everyone, it just isn't possible.
I just hope that Johnny realized that the people who booed not being able to get his autograph weren't booing him!
But perfectly put, thank you Trish!

I was following the feed last night and it felt like I was actually there even though I'm here in the comfort of my home stuck in a wheelchair on the east coast. you are sooooooooooooo lucky you were there. I think what Disney did was pretty lousy. I know they had a schedule but given the situation they could have given Johnny time to sign more autographs. BUT DEFINITELY DON'T boycott the movie just because of that! It wasn't Johnny's fault and from the pics coming thru he didn't look too happy. His presumed annoyance really says how much he respects us as fans. You were there for him. I could only dream of being there. I hope Pirates 3 blows all the other films right out of the water! THANKS FOR ALL THOSE PICS. HE LOOKS SO HOT. AGELESS! THANKS, TRISH!

Hi everyone,
I was reading all of the disappointing posts from DI members who attended the POTC 3 event.

I was on the verge of tears earlier. I feel truly heartbroken for the fans who came such a long way and din't get to see Johnny!

You can clearly see the frustration and disappointment on Johnny'd face in some of the pictures.

Everyone knows Johnny Depp is a man of the his fans, if nothing else. I feel bad for getting to meet him while others were so blatently ignored.

I read that the crowd booed @ the end of the carpet because everyone was being rushed by. That is awful!

I do plan on e-mailing or writing to Disney letting them know my disappointment of the set up of the event. I posted about it on the main board.

I can assure from what I saw and experienced, JOhnny did everything he could to be w/ the people. I did see him come back out after about 5 or 10 mins.

He was truly happy when he was w/ the fans. He had a smile on his face the whole time.

Again all I am so sorry!

From an Aussie's point of view, it was great to follow the drama of the red carpet so very far away! Now I really can't wait fot the drama of "Pirates" itself!

I live in the uk and just wanted to say how disappointed i am at the lack of publicity here for pirates 3. Im writing this at nearly miday monday and have yet to see a single tv add for the film. Unless i am looking in the wrong places, thats quite possible i know, i have yet to see a single proper full length interview with anyone from pirates. I brought four sunday papers yesterday and there wasnt a single reference or interview anywhere. Spiderman had tv adds running for about three weeks and papers etc were full of the film. It seems to me that disney just expect the film to `sell` itself. While that probably true, this still sucks. As a long time johnny fan and huge fan of pirates i was so looking forward to reading interviews etc.
I apologise for this rant and hope it makes sense but i just wanted to get this off my chest. If there is a pirates 4 PLEASE DO BETTER DISNEY,
On a positive note Johnny looked looked simply devine at the LA premiere. xxxxxx

Well said Trish! Of course I get that it bugs you if you've come from far to see Johnny, but just a bit of.. I don't know. Just don't go there expecting much. As you said, it just isn't possible for him to meet everyone.

Please don't feel bad for meeting him! - feel lucky!!
I think he looked so heart-breakingly beautiful, that I would have passed out, if he actually looked at me - or I would say something stupid - don't know, which would be worst LOL.
What present did you buy for him?

I was one of those at the tail end of the red carpet, but I'm a long time fan to know you don't always get the opportune moment to get autographs. If a fan truly loves their actor,(as I do), I certainly won't boycott the movie, Johnny and the rest of the stars worked too hard on this movie. I know Johnny LOVES HIS FANS, he always mentions them wherever he goes, and in any venue such like an interview. Disney did seem terribly disorganized this time, maybe because they spent too much time receiving in all the other people first down the red carpet. Well, Trish said it all best, I feel none neglected. And yes I did catch a glimpse of Johnny,(deppalicious is my term that I coined long time ago on this website). Orlando cute and ever, and Geoffrey was the only picture I got that was good enough to keep, he had his frollible friend,I think Chiquite is the name of the monkey. Anyway, I'm glad I went no matter what. Bottom line people, JOHNNY WILL NEVER DISAPPOINT US, IT'S NOT IN HIS GENES TO DO SO!!!!

Hi I was there and I was at the end of the red carpet - and I was one of those truley disappointed - Just got back to NJ 1:45 AM Tuesday morning - and I don't know what to say except what did I really expect - I got a glimpse of Johnny and got to see all of the actors on the red carpet - which never would have happened if I didn't go - I am glad to hear he came back for a few minutes - missed that though - I had already left in sheer exhaustion! But I have my tickets for Thursday and I will support with all my heart anything Johnny does because he's Johnny - I cannot blame him for the way things went - don't think I'll ever try another premier though :)Unfortunately everything I tried to click on my camera had mouse ears in front of me - HA - I guess I'll laugh about that later - So please everyone send all the pictures I missed!!!! Thanks, and keep cheering on Johnny!!! Valerie, NJ

Are disney trying to wreck AWE for some reason. I live in UK so i dont really know what went on at the premier but its obvious it didnt go well. I previously posted on monday complaining about the lack of publicity here and as at tuesday evening i am still waiting to see my first tv trailer. I no its possible ive missed them but i doubt it. You certainly couldnt miss the spiderman trailers!! We havent had a premier, ok i know not everywhere can, but surely disney could have done more than they seem to be doing. Bearing in mind all the money that pirates have made for disney i really do think they are treating us fans with contempt. Were things really so bad at the premier that people wanted to boycott the film. I could never ever do that xxxxxxx

Just under two days now till i get so see AWE.Have seen good and bad reviews but i`will judge for myself im sure it will be brilliant. What gets me is that the `snobby` critics seem to write it off before they have even seen it, give it a chance guys you might even find you like it, although you would probably never admit it. Long live capt jack xxxxxx

Yes, it is quite unrealistic, if not immature to think that one can count on a celebrity's time at such an event. HEY, I shelled out the BIG MONEY for the premiere tickets.. sure I got to walk down the red carpet which was a blast, but I didn't even get to see Johnny walk by like the fans did who were behind the rail. We were not allowed to stop and wait for him or anyone else, they made us keep walking. So, I could stomp my foot and huff and have a big fit about it, but it wouldn't do any good. And boycotting the movie only takes money out of Johnny's pocket. Am I disappointed in not seeing him even walk by? Sure, but I had a great time and that's what I'm focusing on. By the way, the movie is FANTASTIC! DON'T MISS IT!! --M.

thanks Marielou - I am over it - grateful to have been there at all - it was quite something - and meeting new friends I met here on Depp Impact and even seeing people I met there go back on the plane to Phoenix - I was in the same place as all those actors - Fabulous! And amazing - I have my tickets for tomorrow and I promised to pay for some of my son's friends if they want to go too - have to make sure we beat Spider Man ! Thanks Trish for the great pictures - Val, NJ

HI, I just so happened upon your blog. I might be a rarity as I am a male. I know it is awful that fans did not get the autographs or the chance to see JD. I knew it was going to happen when he didn't come out until like 6:15 or so. I know JD would have stayed and signed every autograph and taken pictures if he had the chance. Also, I will let you know, he rushed through the papparazzi section faster than anyone, and did not even complete the full interview groups they had setup (only doing about 4 of the 10 or so). It was not his fault at all. Disney was disorganized, allowing park-goers to cross the red carpet, and having to hold celebrities while people crossed to exit. It was very disorganized.

My wife and I attended the POTC3 premiere. We just moved to LA and she is a HUGE JD fan, as is her mother. He is all they ever talk about. So I researched and found all the info about the premiere, and it happened to be on her birthday. So I decided that was my present. I did not sleep at all that night, while she did, so I would be sure we could wake up at 2:30 or 3 am. Turned out we got the premiere at 4am, and she went straight to the line, and I got tickets. We got in and got a second row seat at the very front of red carpet (right after the interviewing area). We sat in our two spots for the entire 14 hours, standing for at least 6 of those hours. Many people around us left to go ride the rides at the park, but we did not budge the whole time. I told my wife; if I got you here and we got this spot, you better get a signature. Well we saw everyone and got a couple of autographs. She and I both got so nervous when JD started to come around, I whispered in her ear, do whatever you have to do to get his autograph. When he was right in front of us, she screamed at the top of her lungs at him, and lunged over the two people in front of her to get his autograph. Then the hysterics began. There were a ton of people there, and thus a ton of people who were probably going to be upset. The whole time the people around us kept talking about how this was the largest crowd ever, and last year they only got halfway down the red carpet, and they doubted they would even get that far this year. They ended up having to remove two people from our area because they were pushing the crowd too much, causing one person to fall and one to be pushed against the barricade so hard she couldn't breathe. It was a weird, but definitely great experience.

I was actually lucky enough to be at Disneyland during the red carpet event for the POTC3 premiere. Although, the day started out kinda crappy for me it soon took a turn for the better. To make a long story short I got to the park at about 9am that morning not having any idea how crazy it would be. I literally couldn't find a spot to sit down and wait for event to start. That was until I befriended a girl that was alone at the park for the premiere and get this - it was her first visit to Disneyland ever! So we got to talking and she ended up finding a place for us to watch the arrivals. Not too bad considering we had officially started waiting at around 2:30pm.

Anyhow, to get to the good part, I was actually able to see Johnny! Granted it was later in the day and nightfall had already descended but I saw him clear as day. Even got some footage on my digital camera. Basically I was very happy with everything at that point. I never once had any intentions of getting an autograph or anything - my main goal was to see him in person. Just a glimpse and that's exactly what I got and more. I gotta tell you though that Johnny was so generous signing as many autographs as he could even though Disney security was rushing him through the red carpet. Overall, I had a great time, met some awesome people and got exactly what I wanted - to see JD and boy was it worth it. He's GORGEOUS (inside and out)!
