Battle for Bragging Rights

According to the LA Times, Sony and Disney are in disagreement over which studio's film actually holds the record for opening weekend box office receipts.

While Pirates raked in $404 million in its worldwide opening over a 6-day period compared to $382 million for Spider-Man 3, Sony argues that Disney has included figures from early previews that should not be included in the totals. Disney, of course, denies any misrepresentation and claims that even without the early preview totals, the Pirates still trounced Spidey.

Honestly, though -- with gross receipts for both movies approaching half a billion dollars each within days of their release (not to mention the millions more in store from the upcoming DVD releases), does it really matter? Seems to me there's plenty of bragging to go around.

Trish, your view makes sense. I've been all tied up wanting AWE to trounce ALL the competition like DMC did. Guess it's my competitive nature. LOL Your website is the BEST! I love reading all the comments, news etc. but am not "savvy" enough to put up all the avatars etc like everyone does to post comments, etc. Love your blog too with all the latest Johnny news!

Sometimes it is all about marketing. These studios and their products "need" to be on the public eyes.

Her is a better news:
Music Television announced the nominees for the "2007 MTV Movie Awards."
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" with 4 nods:

BEST MOVIE
BEST PERFORMANCE ( Johnny, Keira)
BEST VILLAIN (Bill Nighy)

Airing LIVE for the first time ever, the "2007 MTV Movie Awards" will be hosted by Sarah Silverman and broadcast from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, CA on Sunday at 8pm/7c.

Yo-ho Pirates life for me...

I read the article and to me it's so ridiculous! Both companies sound like 5 year olds crying "mom loves me more than you." It may be a little harder, given AWE is almost 3 hours long so it does cut out some extra viewing time in the theaters. It doesn't really matter anyway. When the dvd sales start rolling in, I think Pirates 3 is pretty much going to prevail.

I don't blame Disney for trying to surpass Spiderman's records... Must be my competitive nature as well (kudoos Donna!)

If Disney did try to manipulate the numbers with early showings, which weren't supposed to count and what not... so what? Afterall, it's a pirate movie... some piraty tactics would have to be involved... lol

Ok all kidding aside... Trish you are absolutely right... Those executives need to relax!

Sony is upset that they lost the record they knew the risk and they knew that pirates was coming out the same month as spidey. So to Sony get over it a pirate beat a spider.
