Depp lights up 'Dark Shadows'
Graham King to produce Warner feature
By MICHAEL FLEMING
Johnny Depp is getting in touch with his inner vampire.
Warner Bros. is teaming with Depp's Infinitum-Nihil and Graham King's GK Films to develop a feature based on the '60s daytime supernatural sudser "Dark Shadows."
Depp has said in interviews that he has always been obsessed with "Dark Shadows" and had, as a child, wanted to be Barnabas Collins, the vampire patriarch of the series. The role was originated by Jonathan Frid.
A rights deal just closed with the estate of Dan Curtis, the producer/director who created the soap that aired weekdays on ABC, from 1966 to 1971. Depp and King will produce with David Kennedy, who ran Dan Curtis Prods. until Curtis died last year of a brain tumor. Infinitum-Nihil's Christi Dembrowski served as the point person on the deal.
Over 1,225 episodes, "Dark Shadows" was a highly atmospheric, spooky soap that featured gothic horror staples like vampires, monsters, witches, werewolves, ghosts and zombies. The show has a continuing rabid fan base that populates Dark Shadows Festival conventions. Numerous TV revivals of the series and pic adaptations have been attempted over the years but none with as high-wattage a star as Depp.
Depp, who is coming off "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" and who just wrapped the Tim Burton-directed "Sweeney Todd," is next expected to star in "Shantaram," a Mira Nair-directed adaptation of the Gregory David Roberts novel that Depp, King and Plan B are producing for Warner Bros. Depp, King and WB are also mobilizing to make a film about the life of Alexander Litvinenko, with Depp poised to play the former KGB agent, who was fatally poisoned.

Ok, one side of my neck for Sweeney Todd and the other side for Barnabas Collins. I'm running out of sides! Who cares!
yess my neck too.
YES! I am so happy about this!
This would just be mind bending. Fingers crossed!
OOOH yes yes yes, what wonderful news to wake up to. Il stand in line with my neck. !!!
This would be a great one for Tim Burton to direct. Depp/Burton, always awesome!
I can't wait to see this one.I watch that show back in the 60's and I love Vampire movies. He's a Sexy Vampire. Ah Johnny here's my neck too.
Save me a place in the line. Johnny can bite my neck anytime.
oh my sexy vampire man!
Dark Shadows was one of my Moms' fav soapies,I was never sure who she cheered for though. But with Johnny doing Barnabas,I have no doubt! He can NIP me anywhere he wants. Is Johnny gonna tire himself out with all these film projects to juggle? I support him 100%,but I'm thinkin' of Vanessa,Lily-Rose, & Jack?
Its seems that Johnny cannot keep away from that darkside...can he..but him as a dark Vampire...garlic sales are down i hear!!!!!
*wistful sigh*
That would be beautiful! I've always wanted him to play a vampire role, too.
i absolutely LOVED dark shadows when i was a kid ... and i think Johnny would be great in it ... although he could also be a great Qentin ... Barnabas' sexy werewolf nephew I believe!! but what ever he plays in it ... it will be most satisfying!!
This is super wonderful and awesome to boot! A role made just for him. Was a big fan of the show when it was on and hated to see it go. Rushed home from school to see it! Can't wait!!
Cool.. hope it happens. How many movies is this man going to do realistically? All the ones they say he's going to do I'm so excited for. I really would like to see him play in Shantaram, I can't wait for him to do another Hunter impression, but I also would LOVE for him to work with Robert Rodriguez...especially in Sin City! Also I think the Spy would be pretty cool. Now a VAMPIRE!? Awesome! Too bad there's only one Johnny.
I always wanted Johnny to play a vampire role, would be awesome.
I still wonder why he didn't get Tom Cruise's role in Interview with Vampire.
Johnny's look as Sweeney reminds me an older Edward, even the Tim Burton's diagonal ceiling and the roof which he's looks the same that Edward used to live...
He's a Sexy Cop,Sexy Lover,Sexy FBI,Sexy Director,Sexy Drug Dealer,Sexy Pirate,Sexy Barber and now a Sexy Vampire.
I knew it!!! I knew Johnny would do something with a vampire, and thank the lord! Johnny as a vampire....wow...I might actually die from the sex apeal.
Standing in line with my neck!!!!!!
Think Tom Cruise was a bad pick for the Anne Rice movie - never could understand that one! But loved Dark Shadows as a kid - saw Johnathan Frid reading poems and essays at Mercer County College about 17 years ago - it was great - right up front too - and to honor both Barnabus and Captain Jack I have had permanent eyeliner done - top and bottom - it looks great and I will have fun with the memory of why I did it - For Johnny! Val, NJ
This comment is left for Val of NJ...right on Val!...I was with Val every step of the way as she had her eyeliner permanently done a few days ago in honor of Johnny!/and for my general comment...I loved "Dark Shadows" as a child...now as an adult will love it beyond immensely, for sure, with Johnny as the star of it! (Who could resist?!!!)...can hardly wait for its release!...Wouldn't we all just love to run into a vampire who would unfold its cape... and behind that cape would be our Johnny...yippeee!!!! Cannot be afraid of this vampire, but in love with him! Wonder if "red" is Johnny's fave color now??? Think about it...red is a blood color. Johnny is going from using razor blades to cut peoples' (necks?) in "Sweeney Todd" now to using fangs to suck the blood out of (them)in "Dark Shadows"...HA!!! Linda in Los Angeles
I read a rumour floating around that Tim Burton might be the one to direct "Dark Shadows." I hope it turns out to be true. What a duo!!!! It would be one hell of a movie!!!!
Johnny is quickly becomming my actor superhero. First Sweeney, which is something I loved already and to have him star in it has filled me with happy. Now Dark Shadows? Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins would be a DREAM. My Mother is going to FREAK OUT in the best way possible :)
NO ONE could play the part better.
{Brandie B} All I can say is OH MY GOSH!!! I have had a thing for vampire movies since I was a teen.(I'm 40 now)And have been completely mesmerized by Johnny on and off-screen and have been wishing he would play a vampire. I am SO excited!! WOW!! I just about passed out when Captain Jack licked the rock on POTC3!! I'm not sure my poor heart can take seeing Johnny as a vampire!! [She pushes tongue back in mouth and wipes up the puddle of drool on desk, floor, clothing, etc...]
OMG Johnny as a vampire. Be still my beating heart. I have wanted johnny to play a vampire since i became a fan seven years ago. YES YES YES!!!
I love vampires me & my frind were talking about vmpires and Johnny Depp today then I read this....WEIRD
well well the old meets the new. I think I will like this better than Sweeney Todd, the tv shows were better then and Dark Shadows was great. He will be the best looking vampire that ever was. Just like the best looking pirate that ever was.
Permanent eyliner?!
That's cool, Val!!
I'm so disapointed that Tim Burton will direct this. I'm a big Dark Shadows fan. I loved the romance, history and mystery aspects of the series. Tim Burton is not one bit romantic or mysterious. Can he really do this justice? He better not let his wife be in this movie.
When I was a kid, they re-ran Dark Shadows and stopped it right before the end and I am still a little miffed about it. I blame Dark Shadows for my vampire obsession. Can't wait.
