Film Dates for 'Shantaram'
Times of India has a brief article about the pre-production of the upcoming film Shantaram. The filming schedule is reportedly set for January through May, 2008, with Johnny Depp tentatively arriving in India after Christmas:
Mira Nair’s cast for Shantaram is almost through -- it includes Big B and Hollywood star, Johnny Depp, while the music will be by Vishal Bharadwaj.
Will Vishal Bharadwaj make Johnny Depp do another Beedi jalaye le?
The buzz going around is that the director-composer has got the music assignment of Mira Nair’s Shantaram. The composer has been asked by Mira to compose four Sufi numbers, and a masala Bollywood item number for the film. “It’s learnt that the item number will be picturised on Depp,” a source said.
Apparently, Nitin Desai’s Studio in Mumbai is getting ready for the shoot. The art director’s team is busy recreating Dharavi, where Shantaram lived while in Mumbai.
“Most of the shooting is likely to take place in the studio and very little of it may happen at actual locations. Depp may arrive in India after Christmas for the shooting of the film. Mira Nair has asked Amitabh Bachchan who plays a pivotal role in the film to block his dates for the film at that time,” adds the source. Bachchan will be playing a kind-hearted gangster in the film. When contacted Amitabh Bachchan said, “Yes, they have asked me to block my dates from January to May 2008.”

Amitabh Bachchan is amazing (for those of you who do not know him, he is an indian actor who has acted in hundreds of movies, literally! His fame surpasses that of any other actors of his age in Bollywood.) His collaboration with our dearest Johnny will surely be something to see!!! Cannot wait for Shantaram to come out!
I just really hope that it doesn't turnout to be corny as some indian movies tend to be... but so far, they've got the right people involved, so here's hoping! :)
Either way, Johnny will be in it; good enough for me!
I've been waiting for this film forever! This definitely does not sound like it will be corny at all. From what I hear, Mira Nair is excellent. It took her a long time to get just the right cast. By the way, does anyone know what a "beedi jalaye le" is????? It's in the article and I'm stumped.
"Beedi jalaye le" in hindi literally means "light the cigarette", but they want to mean "go ahead, light the cirarette".
It's the title of a song from an indian movie in which the music was by Vishal Bharadwaj, the same person who will be doing the music for Shantaram.
Here's the song from the movie if anyone is interested:

:) My pleasure guys! Glad it helped.
i wonder how good the movie will be will it all be in idian
Damn, I was hoping some of the filming for this would be in Melbourne - which is, after all, where the prison break occurred.
The idea of makin dearest Johnny dance on an item number truly freaks me out...im not quite happy with the news that Farhan Khan would be giving him instructions on how to shake his booty...i just wish Mira doesn't try to make another Monsoon Wedding out of Shantaram.
Vishal's music has always been great.Cant wait to hum it.
As for Shantaram ,i've always imagined him as none other than the most lovable...Johnny Depp.
Nothing can possibly be more exciting than hearing him speak in the slummish Marathi!
You hate him or love him but u can't avoid Johnny, the Showman.
