Winona's Marriage Ban
Monsters & Critics reports on the current Vogue magazine interview with Winona Ryder in which she and her father discuss his refusal to let her marry Johnny Depp in the early 90's.
In a joint interview with Vogue magazine, [Winona's father Michael] Horowitz recalled: "They were the hottest couple in the US at that time, like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are now. They were cool."The full interview is in the August 2007 issue of Vogue.
Ryder said: "But you stopped a wedding."
To which Horowitz replied: "We loved Johnny but you were 17."

I've read some recent articles about Winona where she was discussing a fresh start for herself in life. She was talking about being single at her age and how she hopes that she hasn't yet met the love of her life (otherwise, how sad that would be for her, she was saying...)
I somehow get the feeling (and specially after reading the Vogue article) that she might've never really gotten over Johnny (who can blame her?!)
I kinda feel bad for her... She seems to be a nice girl. Johnny has obviously moved on and is happy with his life. I'm sure he wishes her well... Hopefully, she'll find what she's looking for...
Yikes. Big gap between 17 and 27, and I understand the parent's perspective, but if my dad had stopped me from marrying Johnny Depp, at any age, I think I'd be doin' time for murder. In retrospect, what's the worst that could have happened--her career would have stalled out, or she'd end up 'saddled' with a couple of Johnny Depp's kids? Gee, what a bummer. Something to be said for following your heart even if it doesn't work out--regret over what never was is the worst. She seems like a cool person--there's got to be someone out there who's just right for her. Can't we think of someone? :)
personally, I am glad that Johnny did not marry her or any of the other women he was engaged to. It seems to me that at the time he was dating winona, he had some personal struggles and I don't think she was the girl to help him with his issues. She had her problems as well. I think Vanessa came along in his life at the right time and she has provided the stability and family that he needs so badly. He seems so happy and content and I hope they are together, always.
p.s. I don't know if Winona has ever got her act together and I think Kate is a mess!
If i was engaged with johnny...there is no way my parents could seperate us!
I would have elooped when they were asleep i mean ome on it Johnny Depp:)
As far as I know, Winonna walked out on Johnny, and he took it very hard and started drinking. A good thing, that Tim Burton was there for him. Somehow "Ed Wood" got him back on the trail again (thank you Tim!)
One of the reasons Winonna left our Johnny might have been, that it was very hard for her to be "the hottest couple in the US". The paparazis were shameless and they made every one of their public appearences a nightmare.
No... maybe she never got over him. No one can look into our Johnnys eyes and stay the same.
I mean... look at us! ...all of us hopeless Depp-addicts! LOL
"You were 17" - that's a lame argument!
He really, really loved her.
She may never be loved like that again!
I read somewhere that it was Winona that caused the split. There was a rumour of a bit of E.C.A. (Extra Curriculum Activity) going on between her and Gary Oldman which was never proven but never forgotten either. This caused Johnny to be in a dark place during the filming of 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape' but to me that only increased the sensativity of the character he was portraying. Well done Johnny for turning a bad time into your advantage.
