Updated 'Sweeney' Date & Poster

According to Variety, the wide release date for Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd has been moved up to December 21 in the U.S. An updated poster for the film has also been released (see image below).

From Variety.com:

Johnny Depp will be singing in time for Christmas -- everywhere.

DreamWorks and Paramount have decided to go wide with director Tim Burton's bigscreen adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's Broadway musical "Sweeney Todd" on Dec. 21, versus a platform release.

Original plan was to give the film a limited bow on the 21st and then go wide on Jan. 11, the thought being that "Sweeney Todd" is less commercial and less accessible than most musicals because of its darker storyline. Along those lines, a platform opening would provide a chance to build buzz.

However, when DreamWorks execs began seeing clips from "Sweeney," they realized it had far broader appeal, particularly with Depp starring as the revenge-seeking barber of Fleet Street who uses his blade in gruesome ways to seek justice for the deaths of his wife and child.

The hope is that "Sweeney" will be the sort of signature role for Depp that Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise was.

DreamWorks and Warner Bros. are partners on "Sweeney," with DreamWorks/Paramount handling domestic. Warners will release the musical overseas. The studios believe "Sweeney" will work as a holiday pic.

Also opening wide on Dec. 21 are Disney's sequel "National Treasure: Book of Secrets"; Warner Bros.' dramedy "P.S., I Love You," starring Gerard Butler and Hilary Swank; and Sony laffer "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story," penned by Judd Apatow and Jake Kasdan, who directed. Limited releases include "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly."

"Sweeney" producer Dick Zanuck and Burton already had been pushing for a wide bow, expressing concerns that a platform release could give the impression it was an arthouse title.

At the same time, DreamWorks and Paramount aren't likely to go out with "Sweeney," which is expected to receive an R rating, on more than 1,500 screens. At least that's the thinking at this point.

I'm so thrilled they decided to release it wide on Dec. 21. WHAT UPSETS ME is I read that they will be cutting some scenes out that the "higher ups" felt were too gory, even though Tim Burton was against the cuts! Isn't the gore what the story dictates anyway??? The story is about a barber who slits customers throats! Of course there's going to be loads of blood!! But whatever they eliminate from the movie, I hope that when it comes out on dvd, there'll be an extra disc with all of the deleted scenes on it, Still won't stop me from seeing it. Can't wait!!

I wonder, if people like Johnny more for his looks or his acting? Think about it. If you saw a huge fat guy that acted as well as Johnny, you probably wouldn't take much notice. Lucky for him, he has looks and can act, so people will notice. Sometimes I wonder though... about what people say... interesting, really.

not me! i fell in love with johnnys charisma and personailty in edward scissorhands (with all those scars!) and then i saw him without them..and it was just a bonus that he happens to be astonishingly beautiful. inside + out. what more could u ask for in a man?! if he was just pretty, i wouldnt give him a second glance. nothings more of a turn-off than a egotistical git

and i take notice of 'larger' men..i get crushes all the time on them..jack black, ricky gervais, randy from "my name is earl" :D

Johnny is a great actor, the best actor i think, and of course his good looking, but there are lots of great actors that are not good looking but we love them like Dustin Hoffman, Owen Wilson, Willhem Dafoe, Jim Carey (ugly but extremely talented). and there are "actors" like...sorry, my opinion... Orlando Bloom, Ben Afflect, Brad Pitt that are extremely handsome but terrible actors. Johnny is not the only actor who is talented and handsome there are Harrinson Ford, Tom Cruse, Will Smith, Keanu ReevesMatt Damon, Leonardo Dicaprio but Johnny Depp is the number 1.

Where has anon.. been the last 20 years? I also loved, and still love Jimmy Stewart, brilliant actor, best of the past century,no it's not JUST Johnnys' looks & bod.. please, Hollywood has plenty of good-looking TERRIBLE ACTORS, Johnny just happens to be blessed, and don't think he doesn't relish his followers all these years. I also love Tim Burton, but for different reasons...

To anonymous (after jdeppfan87)

Interesting question!

I think, that Johnnys good looks have taken him far; but more important than good looks is his charisma! He has a charisma like few I have ever seen or heard of. Even when he wears clothes 5 times too big, ugly glasses and a hat, that covers his hair and some of his face, - he still has a charisma, that can sweep you away. Even if he was ugly - with that charisma, we would still love him.

Besides - we love him for more than that...
We also love him for what he is - his way with his fans and his family... the way he lives his life; the more we learn about him, the more, we tend to love him.

Well, there are a lot of big guys who are great actors, and I like them, but I don't usually sit around lusting after them--with the late, lovely Marlon Brando being an exception. Then again, it's not just how they look, but what they make you believe. Lot's of beautiful guys out there who do absolutely nothing for me because there's just nobody home, if you get what I mean. Anyway, it's just darn convenient that Johnny's got it all--one-stop shopping :)

As for gore, Tim Burton probably threw in extra blood and guts for the suits just to have something to negotiate with. I just don't get the MPAA--they let through stuff like "Seven" or "Total Recall" that has massive amounts of gore and/or really disturbing violence, but if the movie is ABOUT violence, with a moral against it, like "Fight Club" or "Sweeney Todd" they freak out. Don't they notice otherwise? And of course they freak out even more over nudity. Has anyone ever been damaged by seeing a pair of bare boobies? They seem to be ok for babies :) But I digress...

THANK GOD, SOMEONE FINALLY STARTED USING THEIR BRAIN'S IN HOLLWOOOD!!! A DEC, 21ST RELEASE DATE IS MUCH MORE REASONABLE, THEN X-MAS DAY!!! ESCPECIALLY, CONSIDERING THE SUBJECT MATTER (AT THAT TIME OF YEAR)! PERSONALLY, I THINK, IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN RELEASED AS OF OCT. 31ST! UNLESS THERE IS QUITE A BIT OF "POST PRODUCTION" TO BE ACCOMPLISHED!!! I WAS ONE OF THE NAGGERS THAT THOUGHT THIS WAS NOT AS GOOD IDEA ON "PARAMOUNT" PIC.S RELEASE DATES!!! THANK GOD, THEY REALIZED THEIR OVERJUDGEMENT!! YOU DON'T NEED TO BE A ROCKET SCIENTEST, TO FIGURE THIS ONE OUT! RELEASING THIS KIND OF PICTURE, (NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU LIKE THE DUO, DEPP AND BURTON),IT WOULDN'T BE A VERY WISE DECISION, ON ANY MAJOR MOTION PICTURES BEHALF!! ULELESS OF COURSE, YOU WANT IT TO DELIBERATLEY BOMB!!!! I'M BEGINNING TO WONDER,WHY MR.DEPP, IS ALWAYS MALIGNED AND ALWAYS UNDERRATED, AND UNDER-EXPOSED!! EVERYONE IN HOLLYWOOD, KNOWS THIS MAN HAS MORE TALENT IN ONE THUMB, THEN ANYONE ELSE "OUTTHERE"!!! THAT HAS BEEN QUOTED BY MANY OF HIS PEERS AND ADMIRER'S!! BON CHANCE, SWEENY TODD! THE RELEASE DATE IS DEFINATELY, MUCH BETTER THEN CHRISTMAS DAY! THEREFORE, MORE WILL GO TO THE THEATER'S!!!! THAT'S A GIVEN!!

What an appropriate time for Johnny's release of this new "Sweeney Todd" film. Think about it....all the angels we see around Christmas time...and here comes our Johnny as one of them and he will be singing! All the trumpets will surely blow as his starring role in this film is released! Glory be!...Linda in Los Angeles, CA

I really hope they don't cut the movie too much -- there are tons of movies with a lot of gore that aren't nearly as good as this one will be; you'd think they'd leave it in films of quality if it's actually important to the plot and not just random & gratuitous. :[

And Johnny was supposed to do "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly," but didn't because of scheduling conflicts with PotC 3...I'm bummed about that, I was sure that was his Oscar. :\ Oh well, bring on the singing! :D

ilona I'm looking forward to Depp's Sweeny Todd as so many of us are. Iv'e had the opportunity to watch many of his films over the last few days. Have notice a few things in Arisona Dream the name of the ship in the first few scenc is called similar to the little girls name in Chocolate.
There's an old black and white movie called the portrait of Dorian Grey I'd love to see it done with of course Johnny in the lead and Tim Burton putting his magic touch to it.
