Depp Reacts to Oscar Nomination

The following is a statement from Johnny Depp regarding his Oscar nomination for Sweeney Todd:
"My sincere thanks to the Academy for this kind nomination. It is both an honor and a privilege to be aligned amongst such ability. My endless gratitude also to Tim Burton and the entire cast and crew of 'Sweeney Todd,' without whom I would not be here today." -- ET Online

Gracious and humble, as always. I figured he would mention Tim and the cast of Sweeney. Just went to see the movie again last night--I am still blown away by the depth of his performance, but am even more angry that the movie itself (and especially Helena's performance) weren't singled out by the Academy. It is such a masterpiece of filmmaking. Still, it is so great for Johnny's work to be appreciated, and maybe the Oscar nod will encourage more people to see this amazing performance.

Until the Academy recognizes musical/comedy the way the Globes do, don't count on movies like Sweeney to get nominated. The Academy likes so-called safe movies. The BAFTA'S and the SATURN awards are still available. I agree with Barby, Tim's Sweeney is ABSOLUTE GENIUS. Just remember Tim and Johnny care about what we the people who pay tickets like, not a governing board of misfits who can't see genius, let alone smell it. Considering that Johnnys' statement about his nomination is more thank you in essence, underneath it all he could probably care less. jdeppfan87

Great to get some recognition for Johnny. Can't understand why Tim hasn't been nominated or any of the rest of the cast. This is an all around wonderful movie. Everyone concerned did an outstanding job. Can't wait to buy the DVD when it comes out.

I think the fact that this was a beloved musical on stage is affecting the nominations a little cuz people are comparing the movie to the stage show which is completely not right or fair. I've seen a lot of comments on youtube about the movie from people who've seen the show and some of them complain about the movie, which I agree is NOT FAIR ,but that may explain some of the oddities with the nominations.

He truly deserves to win if not for Sweeney than for all the amazing work he has done throughout the years.. everytime i see one of his old movies i can really see what the character feels through his eyes and it just makes it so real.. I really hope he wins..

IT'S FABULOUS THAT HE GOT A "NOD", BUT WE ALL KNOW WHAT "INFERIOR" ACTOR, IS GOING TO WIN!!!! DAN! I WON'T WASTE SPACE, ON HIS LAST NAME!! I'M A BIT DISSAPOINTED IN DEPP, FOR NOT DOING A BIT MORE PR. IN THE USA FOR THIS MOVIE!! THIS MOVIE HAD QUITE A BIT OF POTENTIAL!! HOWEVER, IF YOU LOOK AT MOST OF THE NOMINEE'S, THEY PUT THEMSELVES OUT THERE! NOT JUST MORNING SHOW'S AND TMZ!! I WISH JOHNNY HAD A BIT MORE "ARROGANCE" WHEN IT COMES TO PR??? I KNOW HE'S SHY, BUT SO IS DAN!! HOWEVER, DAN, WAS ON LATENIGHT TV, AND DAYSHOWS, AND WAS ON, AND, THE "ALMIGHTY OPRAH"!! THE FACT, JOHNNY, WAS NOMINATED, BEGUILES ME, SEEING AS HE HAD SO MUCH COMPETION, (JUDGING, BY THE GLOBES)! THAT, WE GOT SCREWED OVER, BY NOT SEEING HIS ACCEPTANCE SPEECH!! ALL THIS, MAKES A DIFFERENCE, WHEN OSCAR'S MAKES IT'S "ALMIGHT CHOICES"! MOST OF THE TIME IT'S SL0P!! THE MOST BORING MOVIES OF ALL TIME, ESPECIALLY LATELY!! JUNO, OVER "SWEENY TODD"?? GOOD GOD!!!
ALTHOUGH, I SUPPOSE THEY HAD TO THROW JOHNNY, A CRUMB, SEEING AS HE HAS UPSURPED EVERYOTHER ACTOR OUTHERE, AS FAR AS BRINGING IN THE MOST CASH "WORLDWIDE"!! I JUST WISH HE WOULD MAKE HIMSELF MORE AVAILABLE TO HIS "SUBJECTS", THAT REALLY CARE, AND SHELL OUT THE CASH TO SEE HIM, AND BUY "PIRATES" MERCHANDISE?? I KNOW I WILL CATCH FLACK FOR THIS, HOWEVER, YOU KNOW ALL US, WOULD HAVE LOVED TO SEE HIM AT THE G.G.???

Yes, jdeppfan87, I know what you mean about the musicals/comedies, but remember, 'Dreamgirls' was up last year for many awards, and 'Chicago' won best picture in its year! Neither of those films is, in my humble opinion, even close to the genius of 'Todd', but you are right about the fact that both Johnny and Tim care much more about what we, the fans, think than what Hollywood decides to dole out in the way of accolades. Awards or no, 'Sweeney' is now on my 'top 10' all-time favorite movies!

jdeppfan 87',
i agree w/ you somewhat!! however, underneath it all, there has to be some kind of "ego" when it comes to johnny!! i don't believe for one second, he doesn't care about what happens, after his performances!!! i have read biography's about his walking away from his dailes, however he wants an input into his characters. he will fight for his input w/ the directors about this??? so, don't tell me this man has no ego, and doesn't care?? he does!!!! he just, doesn't act like the "usual suspects", clooney, pitt lewis, travolta!!!! these people, are all media monrels, and fight to their right to get to the "TOP"!! johnny, on the otherhand doesn't , (which kind of ticks me off as a fan)!! i'd love to see him finally win that golden statue, that we, all know he deserves!! deep, down inside, i truly believe he would appreciate it, and definately deserves it, instead of the "poor choices, lately by the aa's!!!" hope to see him there. knowing him, he won't and doesn't care to cross the "line"! however, his fan's definately do!!! it will be interesting to see who he choses??afterall, we are his "bosses"?? this year, i didn't see that at all, so far, and am very dissapointed!!!

Johnny is not doing his own PR - ofcourse. Somebody else is doing it for him. It's not his decision, whether he has to appear in TV and papers/magazines or not...

Fortunately Johnny doesn't
"play the game" and then grovel for the scraps like many of the Hollywood egos do. He does "His thing" and goes home. This is why I don't think he will ever win and Oscar. He simply can't be puppeted into some pre-conceived idea of what an actor should be or how an actor should act. In my opinion Oscar/politics don't deserve Him. Peoples Choice and the SAG Awards are where it counts.

Marielou,
i don't want to start an argument on this blog. however, he does have a say-so in what and when he does pr!!! come on?? every "artist" does. i know many people on this website thinks, jonny doesn't care!! i know, that, thank you. however, many of his peers, and fans, (if you watched the sag, awards), which he was disscluded from, as a nominee), whould have loved to see him there. this is probably why ryan gossling, and virggo morteson, slid into the best actor nomination??? also, johnny's "laisez-faire, attitude" toward pr, to me sounds contradictive!!! you don't think he cares? why was he on boxes of cereal and gave his approval to all the "pirates" merchandising?? there's a ton of it at WALMART!! many of you obviously don't care, if you see your obviously, fav. actor, on tv and whatnot!! my point is many of us do! otherwise this blog would be non-existant? correct? if you, and i didn't care, why write about him at all?? my main concern, is i would like to see my favorite actor, in magazines,on tv, more often. all we see is the same old "song and dance", ridiculous, boring celebs"! that's my point! i know he doesn't care, about "putting himself outhere"! i just wish i would have picked someone, who was a little more pr friendly, as a fav. actor! at this point, he doesn't have to care, however, some of his fans do. i wish, to see him more than twice a year at the movies, that's all!! s-o-r-r-y!! not to mention, there are many people kicking and screaming to be in his shoes, and eventually will, if he remains so reclusive! i don't want to see that day!!

Anonomous,
It is Johnnys job to be an ACTOR, just as it is my job to be a doctors secratary, and that's that!
I am a Depp-fan because he is the best actor ever... He is fantastic!
Then I love him, because nobody loves his fans more than he does, he donates a lot of money to childrens hospitals and he cares about the sick kids; but it's not his JOB to do that.
Besides that, I enjoy watching him giving interviews and speaches on TV. I love listening to his beautiful voice, watching his catlike, elegant way of moving, his beautiful, shy smile and sparkling eyes - and I am TOTALLY in love with his nose!!
- BUT it's really non of my business...
What he does or doesn't besides acting in his own time, is non of my business.
If my boss tried to tell me, what I had to do with my life in my own time, - I would surely find me another boss!

LOL....That's funny. I love his nose too but I've always been fascinated by his lips! I mean I love his overall appearance, but those lips!
As far as his nom goes, I hope the Academy wakes up and gives him the award he really has deserved for so many years. I'm tired of the Academy drooling over Clooney. Never did a thing for me. Johnny was always different.
