Vote for 'Greenest Star'

posted by Trish Bennett 7:39 PM

Johnny Depp is in the top ten nominees to be named "Greenest Star" in Playhouse Disney UK's "Playing for the Planet" awards. Voters can also nominate their own choice if he/she doesn't appear on the list.

It's a little tricky to find at first, but visit this link, then click on the arrow to the far right of the row of animated tabs along the top of the frame (there are four of them, the first one marked "Welcome"). Clicking the arrow on the right will make the first set slide aside and you'll get the set that includes the "Greenest Star" tab.

It's amazing how complicated a preschool site can be. ;-)

Johnny Going Green

According to an article in the Huffington Post, Johnny Depp is on the list to have his Caribbean island home fitted for solar hydrogen power.
In New Jersey, inventor and long-time hydrogen developer Mike Strizki is now showing visitors his house in Hopewell converted to grid-independent solar hydrogen operation (including hydrogen for his fuel cell car), the subject of a long article in the New York Times magazine in May 2007. It's pricey: the conversion cost about $500,000, but his next project in the Cayman Islands is expected to cost less than half of that.

His third client appears to be actor Johnny Depp who wants to convert his Caribbean island home to Strizki's system, and Strizki says several others are in the pipeline. Other solar hydrogen houses have been built or converted on Long Island; near Wiscasset, ME; on Stuart Island, WA; in Indonesia, and, decades ago, in Freiburg, Germany, and Switzerland.

Highest Paid Actor Rankings

posted by Trish Bennett 6:15 PM

Forbes.com ranks Johnny Depp as the second-highest paid actor in Hollywood between June 1, 2007 and June 1, 2008, according to the magazine's web site. He ranks second this year between Will Smith and Eddie Murphy.
Coming in second on the list is Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp, an actor who is known to vacillate between commercial work and artier fare. He still managed to pull down $72 million this year.

In this case, the bold-faced star followed up his three turns as Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney's $2.76 billion Pirates franchise with the Stephen Sondheim serial-killer musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Flat Street. Though the latter hardly set box office records, it did earn Depp an Oscar nomination.

Caliber set with IN

posted by Trish Bennett 12:51 PM

According to 411mania.com, Sam Sarkar's comic book Caliber is set to be filmed in assocation with Johnny Depp's production company, Infinitum Nihil, with John Woo directing:
John Woo will direct comic book adaptation Caliber, to be unveiled at next
week's Comic-Con in San Diego, reports Variety.

The film looks likely to be a three-way co-production of Johnny Depp's Infinitum Nihil, Barry Levine's Radical Comics and Lion Rock, the U.S.-based company that Woo runs with longstanding partner Terence Chang.

Radical Comics' hit story sets King Arthur and his knights as 19th century gunslingers in the Pacific Northwest.

Woo, who is currently editing part two of his epic Red Cliff, previously announced that he will helm Lion Rock's $40 million film 1949, a period romancer set against the tumultuous background of the Chinese Revolution.

Woo's other Stateside projects include a remake of 1969 French crime drama The Sicilian Clan, which starred Alain Delon and Lino Ventura, and The Divide, the story of a Chinese laborer working on America's transcontinental railroads in the 19th century.

King Arthur is a 19th century gunslinger in the Pacific Northwest? What? Does that even make any sense? Sounds pretty ridiculous to me. John Woo is somewhat hit and miss at the best of times, and with such a strange story, I'm not quite sure what this will end up being.

Fun with Johnny

A young extra from Public Enemies shares his experience in an article for The Herald News:

Enemy mine

To 6-year-old William Nero Jr., his experience on the set of "Public Enemy" was priceless because of one person -- Johnny Depp.

The Plainfield boy, who was hired to be a featured extra, spent the day with Depp on set in St. Anne, southeast of Kankakee.

"He was so excited," said his mom, Lindsey Nero, who also got to hang out with her son.

William's favorite Depp role is "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

"My son was having him recite lines from "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,'" his mom said.

William, a.k.a. JuJu, did not know ahead of time that his role would be alongside Depp. He did not even know which movie it was until the last minute.

"They don't tell you," Lindsey said. "We didn't get to see the script or anything."
And that was fine.

"He doesn't have any lines, but he screams a little," mom said.

They were on set for only six hours, but for the young actor that was memorable enough.

"He said this was the most funnest one," mom said.

In addition to a director's chair with "William Nero, child star" on the back, JuJu returned home with autographs and a Hollywood-styled star with his name that he made with the on-set tutor.

Video from PE Wrap

TMZ.com has a mildly entertaining little video of Johnny and the crew of Public Enemies on the set after wrapping the film. They call it "A Hunk and His Junk", which was obviously shot the same time as this pic from JustJared.com. *heh*

Spotted in Chicago

posted by Trish Bennett 7:37 PM

People Magazine offers a little blurb about Johnny's dining experiences in Chicago:
Johnny Depp, hosting a private wrap party for his film Public Enemies at Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse in Chicago. The actor invited about 50 people – and the wine was flowing. The private party (which included the film's director Michael Mann) came and left through the kitchen to keep a low profile.

Meanwhile, others feted their film with an official shindig at Bon V. Marion Cotillard sashayed in wearing a floral T-shirt and jeans, and Giovanni Ribisi arrived early. The party also received one special guest: the Windy City's own Jeremy Piven, who wasn't in the film, but just dropped by to say hi.
